Testing the Google Pixel 5 Camera on the Streets

Happiness trifecta

Recently I was lucky enough to have a combination of three great things. Firstly, my brand new Pixel 5 arrived in the post. Secondly, I had a day off. Thirdly, the weather was unusually nice, especially for Manchester.  A perfect day to test the Google Pixel 5 Camera with some street photography. I bought the Pixel 5 as an upgrade from mid-range 2018 Samsung phone I’d purchased in Cambodia of all places. My only gripe with my old phone was the USB port being a bit loose. Otherwise, my old phone was great.

Playing with a new phone is always fun, but the Pixel 5 feels a bit special. What impressed me most apart from the ultra-wide-angle option, was the dynamic range. You can see below that some shots allow both the darkest blacks and bright details to be visible. Usually, with tiny lenses and smartphones, you have to compromise, but that doesn’t feel like the case with the Google Pixel 5 Camera.

Fish eye

The super-wide lens (0.6) is also fantastic, it feels like having a fish-eye in your pocket. It has so much potential for both goofy portraits and jaw dropping street photography.
Would I ever scrap my DSLR for a smartphone? No, never. But I do feel really satisfied with my choice of phone.

Below are some quick shots I got for fun. I am certainly no architectural photographer. However I did feel satisfied with the low effort, high reward involved with these quick shots. As you can see I am drawn towards street art above anything else.

Have a look down below and feel free to leave me a comment.
