Spinningfields with Maddie Nicolau
Lockdown like everybody else, has me itching to do something creative. Whilst mind numbingly browsing Facebook, I spotted a young girl called Maddie Nicolau in a photography group who was wanting some shots taken. She showed me via Messenger the outfit she was considering and with a strong-woman/corporate vibe, I suggested we shoot in Spinningfields. I took some time out between finishing work and heading home to get her some shots. When we met up Maddie told me that she was yet to start university and how she was preparing to venture into the fashion world.
As soon as we both arrived I had Maddie try a few poses before I started blasting. When shooting (with nothing but a 50mm) one of the neon-clad “helpers” for Spinningfields approached us and told us that photoshoots aren’t allowed on the property. I told him that this wasn’t a commercial shoot so I’m within my right (know your rights!). He told me that one of his colleagues would be coming back once he had left to sort it out. We had finished 3 minutes after the conversation.
Shooting late in the afternoon allowed for some soft light, ideal for portraits. In post, I lightly tweaked the colour for a consistent tone to the images. No over-editing or fancy gimmicks, just simple honest photography.
